Santa's diary:
Toys made so far:
A sleep is one night. To count the sleeps until Christmas, count the nights from tonight until the night of 24 December, when Santa comes. Our page does the counting for you, using your own time zone, so the number is always right.
Grown-ups often use sleeps to help small children wait. Each night, you can cross off one sleep on a paper calendar. Older children can count sleeps in their own way too, or count days and hours instead.
Santa counts the sleeps too, and so do the elves. Santa's day runs on North Pole time, and he goes to bed at ten each night. On Christmas Eve he does something special. At midnight where you live, his sleigh flies over your town for about twenty minutes.
The live countdown on this page shows the sleeps, and the days and seconds too. The numbers change at midnight in your own time zone, so the count matches your clock. Each time a night passes, the number goes down by one.
Between now and Christmas, the village is busy. From 1 September to 25 December Santa gets ready for the big night. You can see him on the live map, and his timetable of breakfast at six and bed at ten keeps the waiting fun.
Sleeps are a good way to help small children understand time. A child may not know what a week is, but they can understand one sleep, and then another. Try making a paper chain with one link for each sleep, and remove a link each night. Older children can work out how many sleeps there are between two dates and check their answer on the page. Grown-ups can count the sleeps for the whole season, from 1 September to 25 December, when Santa is busy. Counting together makes the waiting feel shorter.
